The Jal Shey are an ancient Force tradition associated with intellectual study, diplomacy, and teaching. Their practitioners seek understanding through inquiry and experience, bringing a distinctive scholarly outlook to the galaxy’s Force Traditions.
Old Republic accounts describe respected advisers and teachers whose interests extend beyond martial accomplishment. For roleplay, that background offers a foundation for investigators, mediators, and traveling scholars whose discoveries matter through the people they affect.
Type — Independent Force tradition.
Historical Origin — Ancient; founding circumstances unknown.
Core Emphasis — Intellectual inquiry, diplomacy, and teaching.
Training Model — Neophytes, advisors, and mentors.
Distinctive Practice / Equipment — Force-imbued craft and specialized light armor.
SWTOR-Era Condition — Referenced in SWTOR; contemporary organization uncertain.
The Jal Shey were already an established tradition during the Knights of the Old Republic period. Their founder, original homeworld, and founding date remain unknown.
Older descriptions portray a mobile scholarly community, traveling to pursue knowledge of the Force. That heritage connects study with encounters beyond a single school or settlement.
Jal Shey teaching emphasizes intellectual understanding of the Force. Scholarship and diplomacy are closely associated with the tradition, while physical pursuits receive less emphasis.
This approach does not establish a universal rejection of spirituality. Nor does independence from Jedi and Sith teaching establish neutrality between the light and dark sides.
For a character, inquiry becomes distinctive through practice: comparing conflicting testimony, reconsidering an explanation, or recognizing where their own experience is insufficient. Curiosity may bring them to an unfamiliar community, but understanding its history can require patience, translation, and trust.
Diplomatic skill likewise leaves difficult choices unresolved. A settlement may end a dispute while placing unequal burdens on those expected to uphold it. A convincing argument does not guarantee a just outcome.
Older accounts describe selective recruitment across different species and worlds, favoring scholarly and diplomatic aptitude. Candidates strongly influenced by the dark side or chiefly drawn to combat were generally disfavored.
A credible Jal Shey background should identify sustained instruction and its limits. Consider which questions occupied the teacher, how the student contributed to their work, and what remained unfinished when their circumstances changed.
Neophytes — Learners beginning a continuing pursuit of understanding.
Advisors — Experienced practitioners associated with wisdom and counsel.
Mentors — Accomplished teachers and advisers responsible for passing knowledge onward.
These distinctions give a character’s education useful context. They do not settle expertise in every subject: an experienced adviser can still need a linguist, engineer, local historian, or another Force practitioner.
Many Jal Shey learned basic defensive lightsaber techniques without specializing in combat. Their scholarly emphasis does not establish absolute pacifism.
Give defensive skills their own history. Dangerous travel, interrupted training, or instruction received elsewhere can explain a practitioner’s strengths and vulnerabilities without making martial excellence an automatic consequence of membership.
Jal Shey equipment includes distinctive armor and meditation gloves. The gloves are described as improving awareness during meditation, although their workings remain unexplained.
Supplementary accounts associate Jal Shey craftsmanship with Force imbuement and possible technological contributions. The precise method should remain uncertain where the object’s history provides no answer.
Possessing such an item does not establish the knowledge required to make or repair it. For roleplay, define its purpose, practical limits, maker or provenance, and the circumstances through which it reached its present owner. Numerical equipment bonuses do not become fixed narrative powers.
An inherited object can carry obligations as well as useful properties. Its owner may owe its return, lack the means to maintain it, or discover that an earlier repair changed something important.

The Jal Shey possess an identity distinct from the Jedi Tradition and Sith Tradition. Shared interests can create opportunities for contact, but a particular collaboration, rivalry, or allegiance needs its own history.
StarForgeRP’s account of the Order of Shasa connects Jal Shey counsel with the Selkath tradition’s efforts to confront its inherited Sith influence. This association does not establish a formal alliance or authority over Shasan teaching.
For an individual practitioner, relationships may matter more immediately than institutional labels. A former student might dispute a mentor’s conclusion; a community might welcome an adviser while refusing access to a sacred place. Such encounters give scholarship consequences without requiring either participant to surrender their independence.
SWTOR references the Jal Shey during the Jedi Consular’s Rishi mission, Barsen’thor’s Legacy. While discussing possible futures, Master Kutri O’a names “Hierophant of the Jal Shey” among titles the Consular might one day bear.
The statement is prophetic, rather than confirmation that the appointment occurred. It does not explain the title’s duties or establish a contemporary headquarters, leadership, or network of teachers. “Hierophant” therefore remains distinct from the better-documented categories of neophyte, advisor, and mentor.
For a present-day character, establish the particular route through which Jal Shey teachings reached them. A personal teaching history need not determine the condition of the entire tradition.

Start with an education, a question worth pursuing, and a relationship that makes the pursuit consequential. The Character Creation Guide helps connect those elements with the rest of a character’s life.
Who taught the character, and what brought them together?
Which lesson most strongly influences how they investigate or negotiate?
What can they accomplish reliably, and where must they seek another person’s expertise?
What finding could persuade them to revise a cherished conclusion?
Which teacher, student, community, or former collaborator still matters?
What responsibility competes with their desire to continue traveling?
Who could be harmed by publishing—or withholding—a discovery?
A lender might demand an artifact’s return before an investigation is complete. Repairs might reveal an undocumented alteration. Competing claimants might offer incompatible histories, while a technician needs the scholar’s help to understand what ordinary diagnostics cannot explain.
These situations leave discoveries and outcomes open to play. A Jal Shey character can contribute knowledge while still depending on other people’s judgment, experience, and choices.
