Eyeless near-Humans who perceive the galaxy through the Force.
Miraluka are a near-Human people distinguished by one extraordinary characteristic: they are born without functional eyes and perceive the world around them through the Force. SWTOR describes the species as sharing a common genetic history with Humans, but having evolved into a significantly different people after generations on Alpheridies, a world illuminated by a red dwarf whose light falls primarily within the infrared spectrum.
Although physically blind by Human standards, a Miraluka is not ordinarily impaired by the absence of conventional sight. Their natural connection to the Force allows them to perceive their surroundings, navigate daily life, and interact with the physical world without relying upon visible light. Broader Old Republic material describes this Force sight as fundamental to Miraluka existence rather than an unusual talent possessed by only a few individuals.
Miraluka have historically maintained a comparatively isolated society, but they are far from unknown to the wider galaxy. Their natural relationship with the Force has produced longstanding ties with the Jedi Order, while the destruction of the Miraluka colony on Katarr by Darth Nihilus left a lasting historical connection between the species and the conflicts surrounding the Jedi and Sith. During the Great Galactic War, Alpheridies remained politically independent, although many Miraluka rallied to the Republic and increasing numbers entered Jedi service.
For roleplay, being Miraluka does not automatically mean being a Jedi, mystic, prophet, or philosopher. Force perception is a normal part of Miraluka biology and culture. The more useful questions are how a character understands that connection, where they were raised, and what they chose to do with it.
SWTOR identifies Alpheridies as the Miraluka homeworld. Located in the Abron system of the Expansion Region, the planet orbits a red dwarf whose radiation falls largely outside the visible spectrum. SWTOR attributes the development of Miraluka Force sight to their ancestors' adaptation to this environment.
Broader Legends material adds an older layer to this history. In those accounts, Alpheridies is technically an adopted homeworld: the ancestors of the Miraluka migrated there after their earlier world became uninhabitable. This does not contradict SWTOR's practical treatment of Alpheridies as their homeworld, but it does make their truly ancient origin less straightforward than the game's shorter Holonet description suggests.
By the SWTOR era, Alpheridies is unquestionably the principal center of Miraluka civilization. Miraluka historically traveled less extensively than many galactic peoples, and Old Republic material describes their numbers away from Alpheridies and established colonies as comparatively small.
One of the most important exceptions was Katarr, a Miraluka colony world and gathering place for a Jedi conclave after the Jedi Civil War. Darth Nihilus consumed the life energy of the planet, killing millions of Miraluka as well as many assembled Jedi. Visas Marr was the only known survivor. The catastrophe became an important part of Miraluka historical memory and contributed to their hostility toward the Sith centuries later.
A Miraluka character does not need to have been born on Alpheridies.
They might belong to a family established elsewhere in Republic space, have been raised around the Jedi, come from a small offworld community, or have grown up almost entirely among non-Miraluka.
The distinction matters because an Alpheridies-born character may regard Force sight, Miralukese, traditional institutions, and other Miraluka as ordinary parts of daily life, while an offworld Miraluka may experience their heritage very differently.
Miraluka are remarkably similar to Humans in general appearance and physiology. Their defining physical difference is the absence of functional eyes. They retain vestigial or largely featureless eye sockets, which are commonly concealed beneath veils, masks, headbands, or similar coverings. Broader Legends references place the average adult height at approximately 1.8 meters.
These coverings should not be treated simply as blindfolds.
The Star Wars: The Old Republic Encyclopedia describes Miraluka veils, masks, and headdresses as ceremonial features that also express the individuality of the wearer. This gives Miraluka characters considerable room for personal design: a covering might reflect family, aesthetics, profession, religious outlook, personal history, or simply individual preference.
A Miraluka's actual perception comes through the Force. Old Republic roleplaying material describes Force sight as sufficiently complete for Miraluka to navigate normally, read and write, and function without conventional sight even in darkness. The same material also establishes an important limitation: circumstances that suppress or interfere with the Force can interfere with Miraluka perception.
For StarForgeRP, Force sight should therefore be treated as a different form of perception rather than superior eyesight.
It does not automatically grant omniscience, perfect awareness, the ability to see through every obstacle, effortless detection of deception, or unrestricted knowledge of another person's thoughts. A Miraluka may experience people and surroundings through the Force in ways that differ from conventional vision, but individual skill and training still matter.
This distinction is especially important in roleplay. Force sight should create interesting differences in how a character experiences the world without becoming an automatic solution to stealth, investigation, disguise, or hidden information.
SWTOR's official Miraluka profile does not establish a specific lifespan.
Broader Legends reference material generally places Miraluka longevity below the longest Human estimates, with reference summaries giving a lifespan of up to approximately 84 standard years. This figure originates from older expanded-universe and roleplaying reference material rather than SWTOR itself.
For roleplay, roughly eighty years works well as a general biological guideline rather than an absolute limit.
Medical care, living conditions, injury, warfare, Force training, and individual circumstances can all affect how long a particular character lives. The figure should primarily help establish whether a character is young, mature, elderly, or exceptionally old rather than impose an exact expiration date.
Traditional Miraluka language is Miralukese. Old Republic reference material describes Miraluka as speaking both Miralukese and Galactic Basic, with Miralukese possessing both spoken and written forms.
Basic would be entirely ordinary for a Miraluka accustomed to galactic society, particularly one raised away from Alpheridies.
Miralukese, meanwhile, can provide a useful connection to family and cultural identity. An offworld Miraluka might speak it fluently at home, understand it without speaking confidently, know only ceremonial phrases, or not have learned it at all.
There is not enough established Miralukese vocabulary to require players to construct entire conversations in the language.
For StarForgeRP, it is usually better to indicate that dialogue is being spoken in Miralukese rather than rely on fan-made translators and present their vocabulary as established lore.
Language proficiency can instead tell a story about the character.
Someone raised on Alpheridies may move easily between Miralukese and Basic. Someone raised by Jedi from an early age may know Basic better than their ancestral language. Another character might deliberately study Miralukese later in life as a way of reconnecting with a heritage they did not grow up knowing.
Miraluka culture is inseparable from the simple reality that interaction with the Force is normal.
What other societies may consider an extraordinary supernatural experience is part of everyday perception for a Miraluka. Old Republic material consequently describes Miraluka society as less inclined to regard ordinary Force sensitivity as evidence that someone is automatically a prophet, mystic, or religious authority.
One of the most distinctive Miraluka institutions is the Luka Sene, an indigenous Force tradition headquartered on Alpheridies. Old Republic material describes it as having meditation and education facilities throughout Miraluka cities and an atmosphere resembling an academic institution more than the all-encompassing way of life associated with the Jedi or Sith.
The Luka Sene concentrates particularly on perceptive and sense-oriented applications of the Force. Many members possess only modest abilities beyond normal Miraluka Force sight and use their training within ordinary professions and civic life. More strongly gifted members may become teachers or leaders within the tradition, while some eventually leave to train with the Jedi Order.
The organization also historically concerned itself with Miraluka who became dangerously involved with the dark side. Specialized Sene Seekers could be sent to locate such individuals, first seeking to redirect or redeem them and, where necessary, working toward their capture.
Legends reference material sometimes characterizes Miraluka society as thoughtful, cautious, deliberate, and relatively uninterested in personal glory. These descriptions are useful for understanding broad cultural ideals but should not be treated as mandatory personality traits.
A Miraluka can be impulsive, ambitious, vain, irreverent, aggressive, materialistic, or anything else their individual life supports.
Broader Legends also associates some Miraluka traditions with spiritual interpretations of Ashla and Bogan, representing aspects of light and darkness within the Force. The exact prevalence and practice of these beliefs in the SWTOR era is not developed nearly as clearly as the Luka Sene or the species' Jedi relationship, so they are best treated as an available tradition rather than a universal Miraluka religion.
No firm universal Miraluka naming convention has been established.
Known Miraluka demonstrate considerable variation. Old Republic-era examples include Visas Marr, Q'Anilia, Shoaneb Culu, Shol Bestros, Jirany Sha, and others, showing both single names and combinations of personal and family names. Existing lore does not establish a reliable grammatical pattern that every Miraluka name must follow.
For StarForgeRP, Miraluka names should therefore fit the character's upbringing rather than an invented species-wide formula.
A character from a traditional family on Alpheridies might carry a name inherited through that culture. Someone born in another society might instead have a name typical of their homeworld. An adoptee raised by Jedi could have little connection to their biological family's naming traditions, while another Miraluka might consciously retain an ancestral surname as an important marker of identity.
Fan-created rules suggesting that Miraluka names must have a particular number of syllables or use specific sounds can be useful for inspiration, but they should not be presented as established lore.
Miraluka characters are particularly well suited to linking Species, Birthplace, and Affiliation fields together.
A name alone may not reveal much, but whether the character comes from Alpheridies, a Jedi enclave, a Republic colony, or an Imperial-controlled world can immediately explain why their name and relationship with Miraluka culture differs from another character's.
Miraluka are rare enough that many outsiders may recognize them primarily through their distinctive facial coverings or their reputation for connection to the Force.
SWTOR nevertheless notes that Miraluka generally have little difficulty assimilating into Human society. Their near-Human appearance, widespread use of Basic, and long relationship with the Republic and Jedi make interaction with wider galactic civilization entirely plausible even though Miraluka society itself historically remained comparatively isolated.
That familiarity can create its own assumptions.
An outsider may presume that every Miraluka is a Jedi simply because all Miraluka perceive through the Force. Another might assume that a Miraluka can read thoughts or immediately determine whether someone is good or evil. A Sith might regard their natural Force connection as a potential asset, threat, or curiosity.
None of these assumptions needs to be correct.
For roleplay, Miraluka offer particularly useful opportunities to explore the difference between what another character believes Force sensitivity means and what it actually means to someone for whom the Force has been part of ordinary perception since birth.
The destruction of Katarr also provides an important historical influence without requiring every Miraluka to respond identically to it. For some families it may remain a defining cultural tragedy. Others may know it primarily through history, religious remembrance, Jedi teaching, or inherited stories.
Miraluka relations with the Republic during the SWTOR era are generally favorable, although Alpheridies itself remained an independent system during the Great Galactic War rather than simply becoming a Republic world.
The return of the Sith Empire brought renewed significance to the memory of Katarr. Official SWTOR material describes many Miraluka rallying to the Republic's cause, while their already longstanding relationship with the Jedi grew stronger. Miraluka Jedi became valued members of the Order, with some Jedi Masters attributing their skill in lightsaber combat to the degree of trust they naturally place in Force perception.
Republic-aligned Miraluka therefore require little special explanation.
They might be Jedi, diplomats, scholars, soldiers, specialists, technicians, healers, civilians, or members of communities whose support for the Republic comes from political conviction, opposition to the Sith, personal circumstance, or simple necessity.
Nor does a Republic Miraluka need to support every decision made by the Republic or Jedi Order.
Alpheridies' independence provides especially useful room for characters who oppose the Sith without considering themselves culturally or politically Republic citizens.
A Miraluka aligned with the Sith Empire is considerably less typical, but not impossible.
Official SWTOR material presents the Miraluka population as moving toward the Republic in response to the renewed Sith threat rather than toward the Empire. At the same time, Imperial society possesses a documented tradition of hostility toward alien peoples; SWTOR's Rattataki material explicitly describes the Empire as having a thousand-year anti-alien tradition.
For a Miraluka, natural Force sensitivity adds another complication.
A Miraluka living within Imperial territory would not merely be an alien within a hierarchical society; their connection to the Force could also attract the interest of Sith authorities. That combination can create useful character histories involving captivity, slavery, coercion, Sith training, collaboration, defection, divided loyalties, or families that found themselves inside Imperial territory for reasons beyond their control. This is a roleplaying inference from the species' universal Force perception and the Empire's established social structure rather than a statement that every Imperial Miraluka followed one specific path.
A willing Miraluka Sith is also possible.
Force sensitivity does not make the species biologically immune to anger, ambition, fear, corruption, or the dark side. The important question is why that individual rejected, abandoned, or never shared the cultural and historical attitudes that led many other Miraluka toward the Jedi and Republic.
For StarForgeRP, an Imperial Miraluka works best when their allegiance is treated as part of the character's story rather than justified simply because SWTOR gameplay systems permit unusual species-and-class combinations.
The Force is the defining biological and cultural distinction of the Miraluka.
Unlike most species, Force sensitivity occurs throughout the Miraluka population because their basic perception depends upon it. Their ability to navigate the physical world through Force sight is therefore not evidence that every Miraluka possesses Jedi-level powers. Old Republic material explicitly distinguishes ordinary Miraluka Force perception from individuals whose additional aptitude makes them candidates for advanced Luka Sene or Jedi training.
This distinction is important for roleplay.
A Miraluka civilian can be completely lore-appropriate.
They may use the Force every moment of their life to perceive their surroundings without ever lifting an object telekinetically, experiencing prophetic visions, wielding a lightsaber, or receiving formal Force training.
Those with greater aptitude have several established paths available.
The Luka Sene provides a native Miraluka tradition centered on practical development of perceptive abilities. The Jedi Order has maintained contact with the Miraluka for centuries and accepts many into its ranks. During the Great War this relationship became particularly significant as greater numbers of Miraluka joined the Jedi and rallied against the Sith.
The dark side remains possible as well.
Visas Marr's enslavement and apprenticeship under Darth Nihilus provides an Old Republic-era example of a Miraluka being drawn into Sith service under extreme circumstances, even though she eventually broke from his influence and became associated with the restoration of the Jedi.
Miraluka should therefore not be treated as biologically light-sided.
Their culture and history may make Jedi or light-aligned traditions particularly common, but individuals remain capable of making their own choices.
When creating a Miraluka character, the most useful questions are:
Where were they raised?
Alpheridies, a Miraluka community elsewhere, a Republic world, a Jedi enclave, or somewhere with little connection to their species?
What does Force sight feel like to them?
It has existed since childhood. Do they regard it as completely ordinary, something spiritually meaningful, or simply another sense?
What does their mask or veil mean to them?
Cultural tradition, personal expression, family inheritance, modesty, practicality, profession, or simply preference?
How connected are they to Miraluka culture?
Do they speak Miralukese? Know the traditions of Alpheridies? Have family there? Were they raised entirely offworld?
What relationship do they have with the Luka Sene?
Member, former student, family tradition, unfamiliar outsider, or someone who deliberately chose another path?
Were they ever considered for Jedi training?
Force sight alone does not mean they possess the aptitude or desire to become a Jedi.
What does Katarr mean to them?
Personal ancestral loss, cultural trauma, religious remembrance, historical event, motivation to oppose the Sith, or something more distant?
How do they relate to the Republic?
Support for the Republic is common during the SWTOR era, but Alpheridies is independent and political loyalty should remain an individual decision.
If they serve the Empire, how did that happen?
Imperial Miraluka are possible, but their background should account for both the species' historical relationship with the Sith and the Empire's treatment of aliens.
How do other people misunderstand them?
Are they constantly assumed to be Jedi? Do people mistake Force sight for telepathy, prophecy, or omniscience?
What can they not perceive?
Force sight should create distinctive RP without eliminating uncertainty, stealth, investigation, or environmental danger.
Who are they beyond their species?
Being Miraluka strongly affects how a character experiences the galaxy, but it should not determine their personality, profession, morality, or destiny.
