Technology is woven through nearly every kind of life and work in the SWTOR-era galaxy. Starships connect worlds, droids perform specialized labor, cybernetics and medical systems repair or augment living bodies, communications equipment carries information across enormous distances, and weapons, vehicles, industrial machinery, security systems, and specialist tools support professions ranging from soldier and mechanic to doctor, slicer, explorer, researcher, pilot, and criminal.
For roleplay, the important question is rarely just whether a technology exists. Its usefulness also depends upon circumstances: who can obtain it, who understands it, what infrastructure or supplies support it, what limitations it has, and what relationships or responsibilities surround its possession.
Ordinary technology can matter as much as an extraordinary prototype. An aging starship, repeatedly repaired droid, inherited sidearm, specialized implant, encrypted datapad, or familiar set of engineering tools can preserve personal history, create dependencies, reveal professional connections, and give other characters meaningful reasons to become involved.
Browse technology according to its primary purpose or role in the setting. Many devices naturally overlap more than one category, so detailed entries can connect to additional sections when another technical context is important.
Personal and battlefield weapons, armor, shielding, explosives, targeting equipment, defensive systems, and other technologies intended primarily for combat or protection.
Droids, probes, service units, industrial machines, automated systems, and other technologies designed to perform work with varying degrees of specialization and independence.
Prosthetics, cybernetic replacements and enhancements, implants, pharmaceuticals, diagnostic equipment, treatment systems, medical machinery, and other technologies used to repair, sustain, or augment living beings.
Starships, starfighters, transports, speeders, walkers, propulsion and navigation systems, vehicle components, and the technologies that move people and cargo across worlds and between them.
Holocommunications, the HoloNet, datapads, terminals, sensors, surveillance, encryption, slicing, identification systems, data storage, and other technologies used to transmit, recover, conceal, or protect information.
Engineering tools, fabrication systems, scanners, scientific instruments, mining and salvage machinery, environmental equipment, power systems, industrial machinery, and other technologies used primarily for skilled or specialized work.
Relics, prototypes, recovered systems, unusual engineering traditions, experimental projects, and other technologies whose origin, availability, construction, operation, or capabilities place them outside ordinary contemporary manufacture.
Technology becomes most useful to collaborative roleplay when it creates circumstances around characters rather than functioning only as a list of capabilities. Access, expertise, maintenance, limitations, history, ownership, and relationships can all matter as much as what the equipment does.
Existence does not imply equal access. Wealth, occupation, faction, location, institutional authority, commercial availability, professional contacts, supply chains, salvage, theft, inheritance, and personal relationships may all affect what a character can reasonably obtain.
Terms such as common, specialist, military, restricted, expensive, scarce, obsolete, experimental, or effectively unique are most useful when they describe circumstances rather than universal permissions. An unusual piece of equipment can fit roleplay well when the character has a believable reason to possess it and that possession carries meaningful context.
Owning a technology does not automatically mean understanding it. Different systems may require technical training, calibration, software knowledge, medical servicing, replacement parts, specialized facilities, particular tools, or familiarity with a specific design.
Characters can repair, rebuild, personalize, and modify equipment without every modification becoming a universal improvement. A change may solve one problem while increasing maintenance demands, requiring unusual components, reducing compatibility, or making the equipment recognizable as the work of a particular technician, workshop, organization, or previous owner.
Advanced technology should create possibilities without automatically eliminating danger, uncertainty, distance, or the need for other characters.
Range, power, ammunition, damage, environmental conditions, communications coverage, security, compatibility, replacement parts, incomplete information, operating requirements, and user skill may all matter when appropriate to the particular device. Limitations should arise from the equipment and circumstances rather than being invented simply to prevent a character from succeeding.
Ancient systems, unfamiliar engineering, prototypes, recovered devices, and other exceptional technologies often create stronger stories when discovery is only the beginning.
Finding something does not guarantee understanding it. Understanding one function does not necessarily make the technology reproducible. A recovered prototype may lack replacement parts. An unusual machine may require specialists, facilities, materials, information, or interfaces its new owner does not possess. Valuable technology may also attract competing claims from governments, corporations, researchers, criminals, collectors, former owners, or other interested parties.
Exceptional technology can therefore create investigation, cooperation, responsibility, conflict, and future roleplay even when its complete capabilities remain unknown.
What does the technology actually do, and what can it not do?
Why does this character, organization, crew, or community possess it?
Was it purchased, issued, inherited, built, modified, salvaged, stolen, discovered, or received from someone else?
Who knows how to operate, repair, modify, calibrate, or medically service it?
What supplies, components, power, ammunition, software, facilities, or outside expertise does it require?
What does possessing it reveal about a profession, faction, culture, relationship, previous service, financial circumstances, obligation, or personal history?
Who else might recognize, need, repair, restrict, investigate, buy, steal, recover, or claim it?
What problem or opportunity does the technology create that gives another character a reason to become involved?
The strongest technology concepts rarely exist only to make one character more capable. They create connections to mechanics, doctors, engineers, pilots, slicers, researchers, suppliers, investigators, employers, rivals, institutions, previous owners, and other people who know, need, or want something the character cannot provide alone.
Technology should be treated according to the period in which it appears. A weapon model, vehicle, manufacturing program, specialized system, institution, or technical practice established in a later Star Wars era should not automatically be projected backward into the Old Republic.
When exact dating or capabilities matter, prefer SWTOR-era evidence and use compatible Legends material carefully. Gameplay can demonstrate that a broad technology, visual design, or technical concept belongs in the setting, but item tiers, combat statistics, crafting grades, loot rarity, equipment restrictions, cooldowns, and other game systems should not automatically become precise in-universe rules.
