Transportation connects worlds, workplaces, communities, institutions, and stories throughout the SWTOR-era galaxy. Starships make interstellar travel possible, shuttles and transports connect larger transportation networks, starfighters and military craft support warfare and security, while speeders, walkers, freight vehicles, and specialist machines move people and equipment once they reach the surface.
SWTOR’s major player vessels demonstrate how strongly purpose can shape a ship. The Defender was commissioned around specialized Jedi missions, the BT-7 Thunderclap around Republic rapid assault operations, the X-70B Phantom around Imperial Intelligence, the Fury around high-priority Imperial service and later Sith use, the D5-Mantis around unusually capable combat operation, and the XS Freighter around independent cargo transport and life aboard ship. They establish possibilities rather than a standard package that every privately owned vessel should possess.
For roleplay, the important question is not simply what a character flies or drives. Consider what the machine was built to accomplish, how the character obtained access to it, what people and infrastructure keep it operating, and what responsibilities or complications accompany its use. A transportation concept becomes more useful when it creates relationships and circumstances rather than functioning only as a convenient way to skip between locations.

Starships differ enormously in size, endurance, crew requirements, internal space, ownership, and purpose. A vessel designed to carry a small independent crew should not automatically be treated as equivalent to a shuttle, starfighter, assault ship, bulk transport, carrier, or capital vessel.
When developing a ship, begin with the work it was designed to perform.
Independent spacers, merchants, couriers, explorers, mercenaries, bounty hunters, smugglers, contractors, and other mobile characters may depend upon ships able to carry passengers, supplies, equipment, or cargo while operating away from a larger fleet.
A ship that appears repeatedly can also become a persistent roleplay location. Its bunks, cockpit, cargo areas, engineering access, common spaces, workshop, concealed compartments, storage, or limited medical facilities determine what characters can actually do aboard it.
The XS Freighter is an especially clear SWTOR example: its official description combines an enlarged cargo hold and concealed compartments with weapons, sleeping accommodation, and living space intended for captains who commonly reside aboard their vessels.
An independent ship does not need record-setting speed, exceptional weaponry, or experimental technology to become memorable. History, layout, repairs, former owners, recurring passengers, familiar defects, debts, and accumulated modifications can matter more than a long list of advantages.
Personal ownership is only one way to travel.
Shuttles and passenger transports can move people between planetary surfaces, stations, fleets, large vessels, installations, commercial ports, and other parts of established transportation networks. Military personnel may travel aboard assigned transports; corporate employees aboard company vessels; diplomats aboard government craft; and ordinary travelers through whatever commercial, chartered, or locally organized service suits the location.
Depending upon somebody else for passage can itself create roleplay. Hiring a pilot, sharing a cabin, negotiating cargo space, missing a departure, traveling under another organization’s authority, or becoming stranded when a connection fails creates circumstances that disappear when every character owns a perfectly available private ship.
Starfighters are purpose-built combat craft rather than miniature freighters that happen to carry weapons.
Galactic Starfighter distinguishes scouts, strike fighters, gunships, and bombers around different battlefield functions. The expansion’s precise statistics and upgrade mechanics are gameplay systems, but the broader principle is useful for setting design: combat spacecraft may emphasize reconnaissance and agility, direct engagement, long-range firepower, support, or other specialized roles rather than performing every mission equally well.
A pilot therefore exists within a larger support context. Where is the fighter based? Who owns it? Who repairs and rearms it? What squadron, carrier, security force, mercenary company, criminal group, or military command supports its operation?
A capable combat craft does not also need to be a spacious residence, bulk freighter, mobile hospital, troop carrier, reconnaissance platform, and long-duration headquarters.
Militaries, intelligence services, governments, Jedi, Sith, corporations, and other institutions can operate ships whose design reflects particular responsibilities.
The BT-7 Thunderclap was built around rapid Republic military deployment and heavy protection; the Defender around specialized Jedi duties that included diplomacy, secure communication, medical support, and combat readiness; the X-70B Phantom around highly advanced Imperial Intelligence missions; and the Fury around high-priority Imperial operations before later variants became closely associated with Sith use.
Access to such vessels can therefore carry institutional meaning. A ship may be issued to a unit, assigned to an operative, held by an organization, shared between personnel, or retained under unusual circumstances that remain part of its history.
Named models also retain the context established for them. The X-70B Phantom is explicitly described as an experimental design unsuitable for ordinary mass production, while the D5-Mantis is described as rare and prohibitively expensive to produce. Characters do not need to avoid these vessels, but access to the exact model should make sense within the history being claimed.
Cruisers, carriers, command ships, dreadnoughts, and other large spacecraft operate at a very different social and logistical scale from a personal vessel.
For collaborative roleplay, their greatest value is often as institutions and locations rather than possessions. A major vessel may contain bridge crews, engineering departments, hangars, medical facilities, security sections, troop spaces, supply operations, maintenance teams, intelligence personnel, technicians, administrators, and specialists who may never command the ship themselves.
This creates many ways to belong aboard the same vessel. A pilot, engineer, medic, quartermaster, soldier, navigator, technician, intelligence specialist, deck officer, cargo worker, or civilian contractor can all occupy meaningful positions without becoming captain or owner.
Interstellar travel does not remove the need for local transportation. Cities, deserts, mountains, industrial zones, wilderness, military frontiers, settlements, and remote facilities may still require vehicles suited to very different terrain, distances, loads, and operating conditions.
Speeders and other repulsor vehicles appear throughout SWTOR in civilian, commercial, industrial, security, military, and personal contexts.
For roleplay, their mount speed or acquisition method in the game matters less than what the vehicle does within the scene. Consider its passenger and cargo capacity, exposure to weather or attack, storage requirements, operating environment, maintenance, ownership, and why this particular character has access to it.
A polished urban speeder, battered frontier transport, work vehicle, courier craft, military scout vehicle, or improvised hauler can use familiar technology while communicating very different things about the person or organization relying upon it.
Not every vehicle exists primarily for passengers or combat.
Cargo movement, construction, orbital engineering, industrial work, salvage, mining, maintenance, and other specialized tasks can require purpose-built transportation or mobile machinery. SWTOR’s KDY Orbital Lifter, for example, is explicitly described as a heavy construction vehicle designed for orbital engineering work, demonstrating how narrow professional requirements can produce vehicles that make little sense as ordinary personal transportation.
Such machines are especially useful when a story involves moving something difficult rather than simply moving characters. Heavy cargo, damaged equipment, recovered wreckage, industrial components, construction materials, hazardous substances, or machinery may create requirements that an ordinary speeder cannot solve.
When the tools, fabrication systems, lifting equipment, salvage methods, or industrial process become the main subject, use Tools, Industry & Specialist Equipment.
SWTOR also depicts walkers and other heavy vehicles used for military, reconnaissance, transportation, construction, and specialist purposes. The Alliance Combat Patrol Transport is one explicit example, described as a walker intended to gather intelligence while crossing hostile terrain.
Gameplay availability should not automatically turn every walker mount into commonplace private property. Storage, transport, maintenance, support, institutional ownership, local restrictions, and continuing reason for possession can all help distinguish an ordinary working vehicle from specialized equipment.
A starship or vehicle contains many technical systems, but useful roleplay rarely requires a complete specification sheet.
Establish the systems that change what the machine can actually do, where it can operate, how independently it can travel, what support it needs, and what happens when something important stops working.
For interstellar vessels, sublight propulsion, hyperdrive capability, navigation, fuel, and available routes affect mobility. SWTOR’s official material also treats hypermatter as a critical starship fuel and strategic fleet resource, reinforcing that long-distance travel depends upon material support as well as possessing a hyperdrive.
Exact performance figures are rarely necessary unless a specific story depends upon them. A damaged drive, unreliable modification, depleted supplies, unfamiliar route, missing navigation data, or system requiring specialist attention can matter more than comparing tiny fictional performance differences.
A ship capable of traveling between worlds does not therefore need unlimited endurance. How long can its crew remain aboard comfortably? What requires replenishment? Which failures can be repaired in the field, and which require a proper facility?
Sensors, navigation information, shipboard computers, communications systems, and secure channels can determine what a crew knows and whom they can reach.
The vessel itself may carry specialized equipment, but communications access should not become universal information access. A ship can communicate across great distances without automatically reaching every private database, classified network, isolated archive, or local system.
When sensing, encryption, slicing, stored records, tracking, communications networks, or information security become the central subject, use Communications, Data & Security.
Different vessels may possess radically different offensive and defensive capabilities.
Military and specialist ships establish room for heavy armor, shields, powerful weapons, or other combat systems without making such performance the baseline for every civilian transport. Armament should clarify what a vessel was prepared or authorized to do rather than simply increase its importance.
A heavily armed ship can also create consequences beyond combat. Its appearance may attract attention, alter docking or security circumstances, require specialist maintenance, reveal previous service, or raise questions about who owns it and why.

Interior space strongly affects what kind of roleplay a vessel can support.
A ship intended for repeated long-distance use may need some combination of sleeping space, sanitation, food storage, environmental support, cargo capacity, maintenance access, work areas, secure storage, medical equipment, recreation, passenger accommodation, or places where crew members can obtain privacy.
Established SWTOR vessels demonstrate different solutions. The Defender includes diplomatic, medical, cargo, and meditation spaces, while the Thunderclap emphasizes command, briefing, medical, armory, bunk, and recreational functions. The XS Freighter gives greater attention to cargo, concealment, and living aboard ship.
For a recurring vessel, decide which spaces actually exist. Characters should know where they sleep, work, argue, treat injuries, store cargo, repair equipment, receive passengers, or discover that the ship simply does not have the room they wish it had.
Possessing transportation and being able to operate it successfully are different questions.
A ship or vehicle might be purchased, inherited, issued, chartered, leased, shared, rebuilt, salvaged, captured, stolen, or retained from an earlier occupation. Ownership may also remain complicated by an employer, government, military command, family, creditor, previous owner, criminal organization, or another party with an interest in what happens to it.
Consider who actually controls the vessel, who is authorized to use it, who pays for fuel and berthing, who arranges replacement parts, and who becomes responsible when it is damaged, impounded, stolen, or recognized somewhere inconvenient.
Different machines create different kinds of work.
A small vessel may concentrate several duties among a few people. Larger or more specialized craft can create separate roles for pilots, navigators, engineers, technicians, gunners, medics, security personnel, command staff, cargo handlers, stewards, communications specialists, or other professionals.
Droids can assist without making every organic specialist unnecessary. SWTOR even describes shipboard droids performing routine vessel upkeep and maintenance. Shared responsibility is particularly useful for collaborative roleplay. A pilot can be excellent at flying without rebuilding a hyperdrive. An engineer can understand the machinery without commanding the mission. A navigator, medic, slicer, quartermaster, cargo specialist, technician, or experienced deckhand can become indispensable for reasons unrelated to raw combat power.
Ships and vehicles can accumulate history physically.
Replacement plating, mismatched components, patched interiors, worn controls, altered cargo spaces, improvised fittings, repaired collision damage, customized systems, or a distinctive mechanical problem can make an otherwise ordinary machine recognizable.
Modifications are usually more believable when specialization and tradeoffs remain possible. An alteration may require uncommon components, create additional maintenance, occupy space needed for something else, increase strain on another system, depend upon one particular technician, or perform exceptionally well only under limited circumstances.
Damage can likewise create continuing stories rather than functioning as a temporary inconvenience. A repair may require a suitable workshop, specialist labor, salvage, an obsolete part, transport to another port, an old professional contact, or cooperation from someone the crew would rather not owe.

Transportation depends upon infrastructure as much as machinery.
Spaceports, private berths, military hangars, carrier decks, orbital stations, repair yards, construction facilities, freight terminals, fueling sites, landing fields, and improvised maintenance areas can provide very different levels of security, expertise, supplies, access, and opportunity.
SWTOR makes this dependence especially visible at places such as Kuat Drive Yards, where ship construction and repair infrastructure is strategically important in its own right.
Routes matter too. A destination may be geographically reachable while remaining difficult because of war, piracy, damaged infrastructure, political restrictions, unreliable supplies, unfamiliar space, local security, or the absence of facilities the vessel depends upon.
Use Galaxy to connect transportation with the worlds, settlements, facilities, and other physical destinations through which characters travel.

An original production model, modified civilian vessel, rebuilt transport, local design, salvage project, inherited ship, or extensively customized machine can fit naturally into the setting when its history, purpose, scale, access, and capabilities make sense within Old Republic technology.
Begin with purpose rather than superiority.
What was the vessel or vehicle originally designed to do?
Who would normally own, operate, or crew this kind of machine?
How did this character or organization obtain this particular one?
How many people, supplies, and how much cargo can it reasonably support?
Which rooms, systems, or working spaces actually matter during roleplay?
What does it do poorly, and which situations place unusual strain upon it?
Who understands how to operate, maintain, and repair it?
Which systems have been modified, and what dependencies or tradeoffs followed?
What does its appearance, registration, previous service, manufacturer, former ownership, or repair history reveal?
Where can it be stored, fueled, repaired, or resupplied?
What happens when it is damaged, impounded, stolen, unavailable, or lost?
What opportunities does depending upon it create for other characters?
Gameplay availability does not automatically determine lore availability. A mount, cosmetic vessel, gameplay upgrade, travel convenience, or Cartel Market item may demonstrate that a broad technological concept exists without establishing its exact rarity, price, speed, ownership pattern, legal status, or performance throughout the setting.
The same caution applies across eras. A model or technical arrangement appearing centuries or millennia later does not by itself establish that it existed unchanged during SWTOR.
When a concept relies upon uncertain dating, gameplay mechanics, unusual technological access, later-era evidence, or a distinction between official lore and StarForgeRP-created continuity, use Continuity & Canon.
If the vessel’s prototype, ancient, alien, recovered, or technologically exceptional nature is itself central to the concept, the broader questions belong with Ancient, Alien & Experimental Technology.
An original vessel does not need to outperform established designs in order to become important.
A ship can become distinctive through its layout, crew, reputation, debts, previous owners, hidden spaces, accumulated repairs, difficult maintenance, familiar mechanical habits, modifications, or the stories that have happened aboard it.
When losing the vessel would meaningfully change the characters who rely upon it, it has already become more than transportation.
Transportation works especially well when it connects characters to people and places rather than insulating them from both.
A vessel can become a shared workplace, mobile home, recurring meeting place, professional responsibility, source of debt, valuable target, diplomatic venue, employer-owned asset, family possession, criminal tool, expedition platform, or the only practical means of reaching somewhere important.
Smaller complications can be equally productive: a delayed repair, missing shipment, stolen speeder, damaged navigation system, unexpected passenger, disputed cargo, inaccessible replacement component, unexplained modification, vessel recognized by a former owner, or absent crew member whose specialized knowledge suddenly matters.
The strongest transportation concepts usually create more connections than advantages. They give characters places to meet, work to share, routes to travel, specialists to seek, resources to protect, problems to solve, and history worth remembering.
