Title
Onderon
Standard Text
A long-standing Republic world of royal politics, fortified urban life, dangerous jungles, and ancient Sith legacies.
Heading
Overview
Standard Text
Onderon is an Inner Rim world renowned for expansive jungles, dangerous wildlife, the fortified capital of Iziz, and a monarchy that has endured repeated periods of political upheaval. Its planetary population is comparatively small and concentrated overwhelmingly in Iziz, creating a striking contrast between sophisticated urban life behind formidable defenses and the hazardous wilderness beyond.
Standard Text
By the era depicted in Star Wars: The Old Republic, Onderon had belonged to the Galactic Republic Galactic Republic for centuries while retaining a constitutional monarchy and strong local political institutions. Royal authority exists alongside a noble council and Republic representation, allowing loyalty to Onderon, loyalty to the Republic, support for the monarchy, and opposition to an individual ruler to overlap rather than forming simple opposing camps.
Standard Text
For roleplay, Onderon is most useful as a world of contrasts. Court politics and ordinary city life can exist only a short distance from dangerous hunting grounds and ancient ruins. A resident of Iziz may rarely leave the walls, while hunters, soldiers, guides, rural communities, researchers, and people living outside the capital can have very different relationships with the same planet.
Image / Photo — Optional
Suggested Placement:
Immediately below the Overview as the page's primary establishing visual. Use a wide single-column presentation rather than pairing it with introductory text.
Suggested Subject / Description:
An elevated SWTOR-era view of fortified Iziz rising from Onderon's mountainous jungle. The scene should establish the planet's central contrast: an ornate, prosperous Old Republic capital protected by substantial defensive walls while dense and dangerous wilderness begins beyond them. The city should appear inhabited and technologically sophisticated without becoming a generic Coruscant-like metropolis.
Suggested Format:
Landscape 4:3 website image.
Visual Continuity:
Match the realistic cinematic treatment used across original StarForgeRP artwork. Keep the city and major wall structures readable at approximately 440 × 330 px. The composition should provide enough environmental context to establish Onderon without allowing jungle detail to overwhelm Iziz.
Era / Lore Requirements:
Use SWTOR and Old Republic visual language. Iziz should have monumental, ornate architecture and visibly serious fortifications appropriate to its SWTOR depiction. Surrounding terrain should include lush alien vegetation and mountainous relief. Avoid later Galactic Empire imagery, Clone Wars-era military designs, later-era uniforms, generic modern skyscraper forests, or architectural details that depend specifically on later depictions of Onderon. Do not imply a particular post-Onslaught monarch through banners, portraits, statues, or heraldry.
Reference Material:
No supplied reference image is required. Use established SWTOR: Onslaught depictions and the researched lore summarized in the Image Subject as era and continuity guidance rather than directly reproducing an existing artwork.
Recommended Alt Text:
Fortified Iziz rises above Onderon's dense jungle and mountainous terrain, with monumental Old Republic-era buildings protected behind the city walls.
Image Generation Prompt
Image Subject
Create an elevated establishing view of Iziz on Onderon during the Star Wars: The Old Republic era.
The fortified capital rises from dense, colorful alien jungle and mountainous terrain. Massive defensive walls clearly separate the sophisticated city from the dangerous wilderness beyond. Within the walls, show ornate and monumental Onderonian civic and royal architecture appropriate to SWTOR's Onslaught-era depiction: prosperous, carefully built, technologically advanced, and visually distinct from both Republic-standard military construction and later Galactic Empire architecture.
The landscape beyond Iziz should feel lush, humid, rugged, and difficult to cross, with layered jungle canopy, rocky ridges, distant mountains, and atmospheric depth. The environment should communicate why a large urban population would depend on formidable defenses without turning the scene into an active monster attack.
Small distant speeders, defensive emplacements, or tiny figures may be used for scale, but the city and its relationship to the wilderness are the principal subjects. No battle is taking place. Do not add a lightsaber duel, Sith occupation, Clone Wars battle droids, Galactic Empire imagery, or later-era military equipment.
Do not identify or depict a specific current monarch. If royal architecture is visible, keep it compatible with SWTOR-era Onderon without depending upon a later-era formal building name or design.
No visible text, banners containing readable writing, logos, borders, or interface elements.
Core Prompt
Create an original 4:3 visual for the StarForgeRP website based on the Image Subject described above.
Use a realistic, cinematic concept-art presentation appropriate to Star Wars: The Old Republic and the broader Old Republic era. The image should feel grounded, detailed, atmospheric, and believable, with restrained visual storytelling rather than exaggerated spectacle.
Maintain visual compatibility with the broader StarForgeRP artwork collection without forcing every subject into identical colors or lighting. Dark blue, navy, charcoal, muted metallic tones, cool environmental light, and selective warm gold or amber illumination may provide a recurring visual foundation where appropriate. Allow the natural colors of a character, world, culture, environment, object, or scene to remain recognizable when they are important to the subject.
Compose the scene according to what it needs to communicate. Characters, locations, landscapes, historical scenes, artifacts, architecture, starships, organizations, cultural subjects, technology, and archival compositions do not require identical framing. Give the primary subject a clear visual focus while allowing the surrounding environment to provide useful context, scale, and atmosphere.
Prioritize SWTOR-era and Old Republic-era visual language. Clothing, armor, architecture, starships, weapons, equipment, terminals, droids, vehicles, furnishings, and other technology should feel appropriate to that period when they appear. Avoid designs strongly associated with later Star Wars eras unless the individual Image Subject specifically requires them.
When the subject is tied to a particular faction, organization, culture, location, historical period, or StarForgeRP development, follow the supplied lore and continuity information rather than replacing it with generic Star Wars imagery.
Do not invent lore-significant uniforms, insignia, technology, architecture, symbols, relationships, events, or outcomes merely to make the image more elaborate.
When an uncertain detail is not necessary to the composition, it may remain visually unspecified.
Where appropriate, use environmental depth, atmospheric haze, practical or holographic illumination, weather, planetary terrain, architecture, machinery, interiors, crowds, distant activity, or culturally appropriate surroundings.
Background detail should support the primary subject and help establish the setting without overwhelming the composition.
For original StarForgeRP characters and other community-created subjects, follow supplied descriptions and reference material when available.
Preserve specifically requested identifying features, proportions, clothing, equipment, markings, colors, or other established design elements while creating a new composition rather than closely reproducing unrelated artwork.
If no reference image is supplied, create an original interpretation from the written description. Do not request a reference merely because one could improve precision.
Weapons should appear only when relevant to the subject.
Lightsabers should not be added merely as general Star Wars decoration; include them only when they meaningfully belong to the character, event, location, activity, or subject being depicted.
Do not include titles, captions, logos, borders, watermarks, webpage elements, decorative written language, readable interface labels, or other visible text unless the individual Image Subject specifically calls for them.
Compose the artwork for a 4:3 frame.
Keep important faces, characters, objects, landmarks, vehicles, and other essential visual information comfortably within the composition, with enough surrounding space to prevent important details from being lost near the edges.
The primary subject should remain recognizable and readable when the image is displayed on StarForgeRP at approximately 440 × 330 px.

World, Settlement & Travel
Standard Text
Onderon's environment has shaped where and how its people live. Iziz is surrounded by sweeping mountains and dense vegetation, while dangerous native creatures occupy the wilderness beyond the capital. The city's high fortified walls protect its streets from terrestrial wildlife, and heavy anti-aircraft defenses are capable of engaging hostile spacecraft as well as airborne creatures arriving from Dxun.
Standard Text
Most Onderonians therefore experience their homeworld through a heavily defended urban center rather than through constant wilderness survival. Iziz is ornate, prosperous, and technologically sophisticated. Its defenses are not evidence of a primitive society; they are part of the infrastructure required for a major city to flourish in an unusually hazardous environment.
Standard Text
Iziz is not the only form of settlement Onderon has known. SWTOR records Dox Piter as a collection of villages in the planet's southern reaches beyond the capital's protection, demonstrating that smaller communities can exist outside the principal city. For roleplay, leaving protected areas can therefore change the practical circumstances of a scene: transportation, local knowledge, medical preparation, environmental experience, and the reliability of a route may matter far more outside Iziz than within it.

Government & Society
Standard Text
Onderon is a constitutional monarchy. The dynasty identified during SWTOR traces its lineage to Queen Talia, whose reign belonged to the turbulent period surrounding the Jedi Civil War. By the Onslaught era, the crown existed alongside a noble council, while Senator Deja Nebet represented Onderon in the Republic Senate.
Standard Text
Onslaught demonstrates that the monarch does not operate without competing political pressures. King Regalun Petryph faced strong opposition from both the noble council and the wider public when he attempted to pursue trade arrangements outside Republic statutes. Nebet's connections to the royal family and nobility, combined with Petryph's repeated seclusion, made her influential enough for SWTOR to describe her as Onderon's de facto political leader during that period.
Standard Text
Onderonian political identity therefore need not reduce to monarchy versus Republic. A noble may support the crown while opposing a particular monarch. A senator may defend Republic membership because they believe it serves Onderonian interests. Soldiers, officials, merchants, household retainers, urban residents, and rural communities can encounter the same institutions from very different social positions.

Wildlife, Hunting & Status
Standard Text
Dangerous fauna is one of Onderon's defining environmental realities, but its wildlife is more than a catalogue of monsters. Even relatively manageable herd animals such as the arkonok can be hazardous, while predators such as pritarr and orlax demand considerably greater caution. By contrast, the gentle flirron are admired within Iziz for their spectacular aerial displays, and watching them from the city walls became a popular pastime.
Standard Text
Hunting has particular importance among Onderon's ruling families. SWTOR describes generations of royal hunts, festivals associated with the practice, lavish wilderness lodges, and nobles using impressive quarry as symbols of status. The Royal Hunting Lodge outside Iziz embodies that tradition.
Standard Text
These customs should not be generalized to every Onderonian. SWTOR explicitly contrasts noble excursions with citizens who may never venture beyond the safety of the city walls. The same wilderness can therefore represent prestige to an aristocratic hunter, routine danger to a rural resident, professional terrain to a guide or soldier, or a place an urban citizen has little reason to enter.

History & Legacy
Subheading
Freedon Nadd & the Beast Riders
Standard Text
Onderon's association with the dark side reaches back thousands of years. SWTOR's Galactic History describes Freedon Nadd as a fallen Jedi who studied the dark side, traveled to Onderon, and established himself as a tyrant in Iziz. His rule reshaped the capital and left an influence that persisted long after his death.
Standard Text
Nadd's practice of banishing people beyond Iziz's walls contributed to the rise of the Beast Riders, survivors who learned to tame the planet's dangerous creatures and became formidable opponents of the city. Later conflicts between Nadd's descendants, the Beast Riders, and Jedi intervention helped transform Onderon's political order rather than leaving the two societies permanently separated.
Standard Text
That history still has visible consequences in the SWTOR era. The Ancient Proving Grounds were first used by Naddist cultists before becoming associated with Beast Rider trials and, much later, noble recreation. The Untamed, led during Onslaught by Beast-Lord Akoru, claim descent from the ancient Beast Riders and preserve traditions of living among and taming Onderon's fauna. Their isolationism is specific to their community and should not be treated as representative of Onderonians generally.

Dynasty & Historical Memory
Standard Text
The monarchy encountered in SWTOR traces its ruling dynasty to Queen Talia, linking the modern constitutional monarchy to the world known during the Jedi Civil War. For roleplay, the significance is broader than genealogy: royal legitimacy, noble family histories, military traditions, old monuments, inherited property, historical grievances, and competing interpretations of the past can survive for generations after the events that created them.

The Onslaught Crisis
Standard Text
Onderon again became strategically important during the renewed war between the Republic and Sith Empire Sith Empire. A Republic fleet gathering to defend Corellia Corellia used Onderon to resupply and refuel, while political tensions surrounding King Petryph created an opening for Imperial interference.
Standard Text
The conflict was rooted partly in existing local disputes. Galaxy-wide shortages had made Onderon's resources valuable to the Republic, while Petryph believed his government was inadequately compensated and faced opposition over efforts to arrange trade outside Republic statutes. Imperial manipulation therefore worked through Onderonian political divisions rather than simply imposing an unrelated external conflict on the planet.
Standard Text
SWTOR permits mutually incompatible outcomes for several people involved in the Onderon storyline, including Petryph and Senator Nebet. StarForgeRP's shared continuity does not presently require one player's version of those events to determine the planet's subsequent throne. In the present-day setting, the Onslaught crisis can be treated as established history while the precise post-crisis monarch remains unestablished. For the wider Republic–Imperial war and StarForgeRP's current narrative baseline, see Current Setting Current Setting.

Key Places
List
Iziz — Onderon's capital and home to the vast majority of its population. Its ornate architecture, royal and political institutions, commerce, residences, public life, defensive walls, and heavy emplacements make it the planet's principal urban setting.Royal Hunting Lodge — A lavish estate outside the capital associated with generations of royal hunting tradition. Queen Lina gave the lodge to Petryph when he came of age, and it later became his favored residence during a period of political conflict.Ancient Proving Grounds — A site with successive Naddist, Beast Rider, and noble associations. Its layered history makes it suitable for stories involving archaeology, contested heritage, dangerous exploration, ritual, or competing claims about Onderon's past.Dox Piter — A historically recorded collection of southern villages situated beyond Iziz's protection. The stories surrounding Dox Piter emphasize both the dangers faced by communities outside the capital and the place those experiences can occupy in Onderonian cultural memory.Dxun — Onderon's largest moon and a distinct world with exceptionally dangerous wildlife. Its history is strongly connected with the Mandalorians Mandalorians, while SWTOR later uses the moon for the Nature of Progress operation involving Czerka activity and Trandoshan hunters.

Using Onderon in Roleplay
Standard Text
Onderon can support political, civilian, wilderness, historical, criminal, diplomatic, military, and social stories without requiring every character to become involved in the throne or ancient Sith history. Useful connections emerge when a character's background determines which version of the planet they actually know.
List
An Iziz resident may be completely comfortable with court politics, crowded urban life, and massive defensive walls while having little practical wilderness experience.A noble hunt can combine social competition with genuine environmental danger, especially when reputation matters as much as the quarry.A guide, soldier, researcher, or rural resident may possess knowledge that wealthy or politically connected visitors lack once a group leaves protected territory.A family, institution, or noble house may remember the Onslaught crisis very differently depending on its relationship with Petryph, Nebet, the Republic, or the people caught between them.Republic supply requirements, freight contracts, shortages, trade disputes, and political disagreements over compensation can connect merchants and civilians to the wider war without putting them on a battlefield.Archaeologists, Jedi, collectors, criminals, historians, or local communities may disagree over artifacts and sites connected with Freedon Nadd or the Beast Riders.Contact with the Untamed can create a cultural and practical encounter very different from dealing with mainstream urban Onderonians.Characters who leave Onderon can still remain connected through family obligations, inherited property, royal or government service, commercial relationships, historical research, military commitments, or unresolved events at home.
