Title
Taris
Small Text / Caption
A ruined Outer Rim city-world where wilderness, settlement, salvage, and the rakghoul plague have grown through the remains of a planetary metropolis.
Standard Text
Taris was once an ecumenopolis: a world dominated by towering cities, transit networks, industrial districts, and densely populated levels built one above another. During the Jedi Civil War, Darth Malak ordered the planet bombarded while attempting to prevent the Jedi Knight Bastila Shan from escaping. Billions died, the cityscape collapsed, and much of the surviving infrastructure was buried beneath the wreckage.
Standard Text
The planet endured. Over the following three centuries, vegetation and wildlife spread through the ruins, wetlands formed around collapsed districts, and surviving structures became part of a new ecosystem. Rakghouls remained one of Taris's defining dangers, while buried technology, records, buildings, and personal possessions continued to attract explorers, scientists, settlers, and scavengers.
Standard Text
During the early SWTOR era, the Galactic Republic (https://www.starforgerp.com/lore/factions-powers/galactic-republic) began reclaiming Taris as both a practical colonization project and a symbol that destruction by the Sith could be overcome. That effort was later subjected to direct military attack by the Sith Empire (https://www.starforgerp.com/lore/factions-powers/sith-empire).
Standard Text
For roleplay, Taris is most useful as a world of overlapping histories. Pre-bombardment structures, evidence of the Jedi Civil War, centuries of ecological change, Republic reclamation works, later military damage, settlements, abandoned positions, and newer activity can all occupy the same landscape. For the wider galactic circumstances surrounding present-day stories, see Current Setting (https://www.starforgerp.com/timeline/current-setting).
Image / Photo — Optional
Suggested Placement:
Immediately below the opening introduction and before Quick Reference.
Suggested Subject / Description:
A wide environmental view of Taris showing the enormous remains of its old city-world rising through wetlands and dense regrowth. Broken towers, collapsed transit or structural platforms, and partially submerged urban infrastructure should establish the scale of the lost metropolis. A small operational field camp or survey site in the foreground should show that sentient activity continues without implying that the entire planet belongs to one faction. The camp may include practical shelters, sealed equipment, communications gear, utility lighting, and a speeder or field vehicle. Distant personnel may appear in neutral expedition or work clothing.
The primary visual idea should be coexistence: ancient metropolitan ruin, three centuries of natural regrowth, and contemporary activity occupying the same landscape.
Suggested Format:
Landscape 4:3 website image.
Visual Continuity:
Match the realistic cinematic treatment used across StarForgeRP environmental artwork. The scale of the ruins should remain readable when displayed at approximately 440 × 330 px. Keep the field camp visually secondary to the world itself.
Era / Lore Requirements:
Use SWTOR and Old Republic architectural and technological language. Taris should not resemble a later Galactic Civil War-era Rebel or Imperial site.
Do not depict a pristine city skyline. Ruined towers and infrastructure should show severe age, structural collapse, vegetation, water damage, and long-term exposure.
Do not make the landscape uniformly toxic or lifeless. SWTOR describes substantial ecological recovery alongside persistent contaminated areas.
Do not use Republic or Imperial banners, territorial markers, military formations, or other imagery that implies unsupported present-day planetwide control.
Rakghouls do not need to appear. If included at all, they should have an actual narrative purpose rather than functioning as decorative monsters.
No lightsabers unless a specific future version of the image is meant to depict a Force-user story.
Reference Material:
Official SWTOR Taris Holonet imagery and official Taris concept art may be used as research references for the planet's established environmental and architectural language. The finished artwork should be an original composition rather than a reproduction of those images.

Image Generation Prompt
Image Subject
A broad SWTOR-era view of Taris, an Outer Rim world built through the ruins of a once planet-spanning city. Enormous damaged towers, fractured structural platforms, collapsed transit infrastructure, and partially submerged urban remains rise from dense vegetation, wetlands, and swampy ground that have developed over centuries.
The ruined city should remain unmistakably technological even where vegetation has overtaken it. Show the age and scale of the devastation through weathered surfaces, broken silhouettes, exposed internal structures, fallen architectural sections, standing water, vines, trees, and layers of debris rather than through an active explosion or recent catastrophe.
In the foreground or middle distance, include a modest functioning field camp, survey station, or reclamation work site that demonstrates continued sentient activity on the planet. Use practical Old Republic-era shelters, sealed storage, communications equipment, portable power or lighting, and perhaps a utility speeder or field vehicle. A small number of distant workers, researchers, scouts, engineers, or security personnel may be present in practical expedition clothing or equipment.
Do not display faction flags, military banners, large troop formations, or distinctive territorial insignia that would establish unsupported present-day Republic or Imperial ownership. The site should be capable of representing a research, survey, salvage, reconstruction, or locally administered expedition without determining planetwide political control.
The ecosystem should appear vigorous rather than uniformly poisoned. Vegetation, wetland growth, and recovered wildlife habitat should contrast with isolated signs of contamination or hazardous old infrastructure. The scene should communicate that ecological recovery and environmental danger coexist.
Rakghouls are not required and should not be added merely because they are associated with Taris. If any distant indication of biological danger appears, keep it subtle and secondary.
Prioritize established SWTOR-era Taris visual language: enormous weathered city structures, reclaimed urban terrain, swamp and jungle growth, and Old Republic technology. Avoid later Galactic Civil War-era military designs, pristine modern city skylines, generic desert ruins, or imagery that makes Taris appear completely abandoned.
The primary subject is Taris itself: a surviving world where a destroyed metropolis, centuries of natural regrowth, and renewed habitation exist together.
Core Prompt
Create an original 4:3 visual for the StarForgeRP website based on the Image Subject described above.
Use a realistic, cinematic concept-art presentation appropriate to Star Wars: The Old Republic and the broader Old Republic era. The image should feel grounded, detailed, atmospheric, and believable, with restrained visual storytelling rather than exaggerated spectacle.
Maintain visual compatibility with the broader StarForgeRP artwork collection without forcing every subject into identical colors or lighting. Dark blue, navy, charcoal, muted metallic tones, cool environmental light, and selective warm gold or amber illumination may provide a recurring visual foundation where appropriate. Allow the natural colors of a character, world, culture, environment, object, or scene to remain recognizable when they are important to the subject.
Compose the scene according to what it needs to communicate. Characters, locations, landscapes, historical scenes, artifacts, architecture, starships, organizations, cultural subjects, technology, and archival compositions do not require identical framing. Give the primary subject a clear visual focus while allowing the surrounding environment to provide useful context, scale, and atmosphere.
Prioritize SWTOR-era and Old Republic-era visual language. Clothing, armor, architecture, starships, weapons, equipment, terminals, droids, vehicles, furnishings, and other technology should feel appropriate to that period when they appear. Avoid designs strongly associated with later Star Wars eras unless the individual Image Subject specifically requires them.
When the subject is tied to a particular faction, organization, culture, location, historical period, or StarForgeRP development, follow the supplied lore and continuity information rather than replacing it with generic Star Wars imagery.
Do not invent lore-significant uniforms, insignia, technology, architecture, symbols, relationships, events, or outcomes merely to make the image more elaborate.
When an uncertain detail is not necessary to the composition, it may remain visually unspecified.
Where appropriate, use environmental depth, atmospheric haze, practical or holographic illumination, weather, planetary terrain, architecture, machinery, interiors, crowds, distant activity, or culturally appropriate surroundings.
Background detail should support the primary subject and help establish the setting without overwhelming the composition.
For original StarForgeRP characters and other community-created subjects, follow supplied descriptions and reference material when available.
Preserve specifically requested identifying features, proportions, clothing, equipment, markings, colors, or other established design elements while creating a new composition rather than closely reproducing unrelated artwork.
If no reference image is supplied, create an original interpretation from the written description. Do not request a reference merely because one could improve precision.
Weapons should appear only when relevant to the subject.
Lightsabers should not be added merely as general Star Wars decoration; include them only when they meaningfully belong to the character, event, location, activity, or subject being depicted.
Do not include titles, captions, logos, borders, watermarks, webpage elements, decorative written language, readable interface labels, or other visible text unless the individual Image Subject specifically calls for them.
Compose the artwork for a 4:3 frame.
Keep important faces, characters, objects, landmarks, vehicles, and other essential visual information comfortably within the composition, with enough surrounding space to prevent important details from being lost near the edges.
The primary subject should remain recognizable and readable when the image is displayed on StarForgeRP at approximately 440 × 330 px.

Ruins & Environment
Standard Text
Modern Taris is defined by the interaction between a destroyed city and the ecosystem that developed through it. Before the bombardment, urbanization and industry had already badly damaged much of the planet's natural environment. After the city's collapse and centuries without comparable development, vegetation spread through the ruins, wildlife populations recovered, and new jungles and wetlands formed among structures that had once displaced the landscape beneath them.
Standard Text
That recovery is uneven. Some districts are remarkably green and biologically successful, while others contain acidic water, radioactive sinkholes, industrial contamination, unstable reactors, or hazardous materials buried beneath centuries of debris. Taris should therefore not be treated as either a uniformly poisoned wasteland or an ordinary wilderness.
Standard Text
The ruins themselves are terrain. Broken building platforms, buried transit networks, flooded passages, old power systems, fractured towers, sealed facilities, and subsurface infrastructure can determine where characters travel, establish camps, recover equipment, or conduct research. A single expedition may cross wilderness that was once a rooftop, enter a structure whose lower floors are now underground, and discover machinery that has remained sealed since the Jedi Civil War.

History
Subheading
Before the Bombardment
Standard Text
Old Taris grew around important hyperspace trade routes and developed into a vast city-world. Its prosperity did not benefit everyone equally. As the planet's economic position declined, wealth remained concentrated in the upper levels while poverty, famine, gang violence, and deteriorating conditions became increasingly severe below.
Standard Text
The city's social divisions were also enforced through law. After unrest among the working classes, authorities imposed harsh restrictions on non-Human residents, including exclusion from public office and limitations on leaving the lower levels without authorization. The destruction of Taris was therefore the loss of an extraordinary civilization, but not of an ideal one. Recovered neighborhoods, records, memorials, and family histories may preserve both its achievements and its injustices.

Malak's Bombardment
Standard Text
During the Jedi Civil War, Darth Malak's forces pursued Bastila Shan to Taris. When Bastila escaped capture with Revan's assistance, Malak ordered his fleet to bombard the planet from orbit rather than allow her to escape. The attack devastated the planetary city and caused casualties numbering in the billions.
Standard Text
Not everyone died immediately. Some survivors endured within damaged structures and underground areas, and descendants of the undercity outcasts known as the Promised Ones survived for generations in an isolated subterranean colony. Their community eventually disappeared through disease, starvation, radiation, and the persistent rakghoul threat, leaving records of lives that continued long after the galaxy had largely written Taris off.

Reclamation and Imperial Assault
Standard Text
After the Treaty of Coruscant, the Republic began a major reclamation project. Cleanup crews, soldiers, scientists, administrators, and settlers established footholds among the ruins, while Olaris Reclamation Base and the Republic Resettlement Zone became important centers of the rebuilding effort. The project had practical goals, but its political symbolism was equally important: restoring a world destroyed by the Sith could demonstrate that such destruction was not permanent.
Standard Text
Settlement formed part of that effort. A Cathar (https://www.starforgerp.com/lore/species/cathar) community became particularly associated with the reclamation project, even as shortages and weak infrastructure demonstrated how difficult permanent resettlement remained.
Standard Text
The Republic's Taris story occurs significantly before the Imperial story on the same world. By the later period, the Empire had begun a major offensive intended to break the reconstruction project, attacking Republic defenses and settlements rather than allowing Taris to become a lasting symbol of recovery.
Standard Text
Those campaigns added another layer to the ruins. Republic construction sites, later battle damage, abandoned military positions, damaged settlements, and Imperial operational remains can exist beside much older structures. A location's history does not have to end with whichever faction occupied it during the original planetary storyline.

Life, Work & Travel
Standard Text
Taris supports more than military or survival stories. Wherever settlements, field stations, laboratories, salvage operations, or transport routes exist, ordinary work must sustain them. Engineers keep power and structural systems functioning. Pilots and logistics crews move supplies. Researchers study the ecosystem and ruins. Medical personnel prepare for contamination and infectious exposure. Archaeologists and historians decide what can be recovered without destroying the evidence around it.
Standard Text
Salvage is especially complicated on a planet whose ruins once housed billions of people. A recovered object may be scrap, valuable technology, archaeological evidence, personal property, a family heirloom, or material taken from what someone considers a grave site. Disputes over ownership and preservation can therefore be as important as the hazards involved in reaching the object.
Standard Text
Travel conditions depend heavily on the destination. Established routes and inhabited sites may support routine transportation, while remote districts can require survey equipment, sealed supplies, reliable communications, environmental protection, medical precautions, and an extraction plan. Collapsed infrastructure often matters as much as distance: a destination that appears nearby may be separated by flooded levels, broken platforms, unstable ruins, or contaminated terrain.
Heading
Rakghouls & Biological Hazards
Standard Text
Rakghouls are one of Taris's most persistent dangers. They are not simply aggressive wildlife; they are associated with a highly communicable disease capable of infecting numerous humanoid species and, in many cases, transforming its victims. Different strains and mutations have produced varied forms of rakghoul, and the long-isolated population on Taris has survived environmental upheaval that destroyed much of the old world around it.
Standard Text
Exposure creates consequences beyond combat. A suspected infection can require isolation, medical evaluation, controlled evacuation, decontamination, or difficult decisions about whether a route, camp, or facility remains safe to use. Researchers may also be interested in how the disease changes, spreads, or interacts with populations that have lived around Taris for generations.
Standard Text
Rakghouls do not need to dominate every Taris story. Their importance often lies in shaping precautions, abandoned spaces, settlement planning, emergency procedures, and the reputation of regions that may otherwise support entirely different kinds of roleplay.

Important Regions & Sites
Standard Text
Taris contains far more ruins than any single reference page can catalog. The following locations are especially useful anchors for understanding its history and geography.
List
Olaris Reclamation Base and the Republic Resettlement Zone — Major centers of the Republic's early reconstruction project, associated with administration, military support, logistics, settlement, and attempts to establish a durable foothold among the ruins.Sinking City — The collapsed heart of old Taris, where former business and cultural districts became a vast zone of broken structural platforms, urban decay, scavenging, and rakghoul activity.Dynamet General Hospital — A major pre-bombardment medical facility whose ruins survived within the Sinking City, making it a natural setting for medical history, lost records, salvage, research, and hazardous exploration.Brell Sediment — A ruined industrial area dominated by an acidic lake and the remains of old environmental and chemical infrastructure.Transport Station Five — One of the surviving remnants of the transportation system that once moved enormous populations through the lower levels of the city-world.Tularan Marsh — Swampland occupying what was once an industrial district around the Tularan Skyway and major power infrastructure.Endar Spire Wreckage — The remains of the Republic cruiser shot down over Taris during Malak's pursuit of Bastila Shan, later used and scavenged by inhabitants of the ruined world.

Using Taris in Roleplay
Standard Text
Taris works especially well when a story gives characters a specific place, community, route, site, or problem to care about. The planet's scale allows meaningful consequences without requiring a roleplay to determine the fate of the entire world.
List
Reconstruction — A settlement loses power, water treatment, transport access, or structural stability, and restoring it requires work inside older ruins.Archaeology & Records — An expedition uncovers an archive, residential district, memorial, or administrative record that changes what is known about people who lived before the bombardment.Salvage & Ownership — Several groups have legitimate but incompatible claims to recovered technology, property, remains, or artifacts.Medicine & Containment — Suspected rakghoul exposure forces a team to locate missing personnel, establish a safe evacuation route, or recover medical equipment from an unsafe site.Exploration & Rescue — A survey expedition disappears after entering flooded, collapsed, or previously inaccessible infrastructure.Military Legacy — An abandoned Republic or Imperial position still contains ordnance, intelligence, communications records, or equipment that someone has reason to recover.Settlement & Community — Characters deal with the practical consequences of making a home in a place where supply routes, environmental hazards, historical claims, and old infrastructure all shape daily life.
Standard Text
Taris does not need another planetary catastrophe to matter. Saving one settlement, recovering one archive, identifying one lost family, reopening one route, containing one outbreak, or deciding what should happen to one rediscovered site can create consequences that remain useful long after the immediate story ends.
