Overview
Standard Text
Ilum is a remote, mountainous ice world whose importance far exceeds its sparse habitation and isolated location. Beneath its frozen surface lie extensive crystal caverns containing rare Adegan crystals exceptionally suited to lightsabers. For generations, the Jedi Order (https://www.starforgerp.com/lore/organizations/jedi-order) maintained enclaves and temples on the planet, using Ilum as a place of pilgrimage, meditation, training, and lightsaber construction.
The world's isolation did not keep it beyond the reach of galactic war. The Sith Empire eventually discovered Ilum, attacked its small Jedi presence, and began exploiting the crystal deposits. Republic forces later returned after learning that the crystals could support military applications far beyond lightsabers, including unusually effective large-scale stealth technology.
Ilum is therefore both sacred ground and contested territory: a place of ancient Jedi tradition layered beneath military fortifications, ruined sanctuaries, abandoned positions, Gree technology, and the remains of later conflicts. Characters usually come to Ilum for a reason—pilgrimage, research, military duty, archaeology, rescue, salvage, intelligence work, or the pursuit of something hidden beneath the ice.
Image / Photo — Optional
Suggested Placement:
Immediately below the Overview.
Suggested Subject / Description:
A wide SWTOR-era environmental view of Ilum. Snow-covered mountain walls and windswept ice surround a secluded Jedi enclave built into or against the frozen rock. The entrance to a subterranean crystal cavern is visible as a restrained natural glow deeper within the site. The composition should communicate remoteness, sacred Jedi history, difficult terrain, and the planet's unusual crystal resources without making the scene look like a later First Order installation or an industrial strip mine.
Suggested Format:
4:3 landscape website image.
Visual Continuity:
Use the realistic, cinematic treatment established for StarForgeRP environmental artwork. Keep the Jedi installation smaller than the surrounding landscape so Ilum feels remote rather than urbanized. Preserve strong readability when displayed at approximately 440 × 330 px.
Era / Lore Requirements:
Use Old Republic/SWTOR-era Jedi architecture, equipment, and environmental design. The landscape should remain mountainous, frozen, and sparsely developed. Crystal formations should appear naturally integrated into the cavern rather than as an unlimited exposed commodity. Do not depict Starkiller Base-era excavation, First Order architecture, an equatorial trench, Imperial-era stormtroopers, Rebel installations, or other later-period imagery.
Recommended Alt Text:
Snow-covered Ilum mountains surrounding a secluded Old Republic Jedi enclave above a glowing crystal-cavern entrance.
Alt text should be checked against the completed image before publication.
Image Generation Prompt
Image Subject
A remote Jedi site on the frozen planet Ilum during the Star Wars: The Old Republic era.
Show a broad mountainous ice landscape dominated by snow-covered ridges, exposed blue-white ice, windblown snow, and steep frozen rock. A modest Old Republic-era Jedi enclave or temple complex is built into the mountainside, isolated and functional rather than monumental or densely populated. Its architecture should follow SWTOR-era Jedi visual language and should appear adapted to the hostile climate.
A protected entrance leading toward Ilum's subterranean crystal caverns should be visible within or below the enclave. From deeper inside, natural Adegan crystal formations cast a restrained cool glow that suggests the importance of the caverns without turning the entire landscape into exposed crystal. The crystals should feel rare, geological, and embedded in the environment rather than neatly harvested or arranged.
The primary purpose of the scene is to communicate Ilum's combination of isolation, dangerous cold, ancient Jedi pilgrimage, and hidden lightsaber-crystal resources.
No large battle is taking place. Small distant personnel, landing equipment, or an Old Republic-era transport may be included for scale if useful, but they should not dominate the composition.
Do not depict First Order structures, Starkiller Base excavation, a planet-spanning trench, Galactic Civil War Rebel facilities, Imperial stormtroopers, later-era vehicles, or other imagery strongly associated with Ilum thousands of years after the SWTOR period.
Do not add readable signs, Jedi logos, lightsabers, weapons fire, or decorative written language merely to make the scene appear more recognizably Star Wars.
Core Prompt
Create an original 4:3 visual for the StarForgeRP website based on the Image Subject described above.
Use a realistic, cinematic concept-art presentation appropriate to Star Wars: The Old Republic and the broader Old Republic era. The image should feel grounded, detailed, atmospheric, and believable, with restrained visual storytelling rather than exaggerated spectacle.
Maintain visual compatibility with the broader StarForgeRP artwork collection without forcing every subject into identical colors or lighting. Dark blue, navy, charcoal, muted metallic tones, cool environmental light, and selective warm gold or amber illumination may provide a recurring visual foundation where appropriate. Allow the natural colors of a character, world, culture, environment, object, or scene to remain recognizable when they are important to the subject.
Compose the scene according to what it needs to communicate. Characters, locations, landscapes, historical scenes, artifacts, architecture, starships, organizations, cultural subjects, technology, and archival compositions do not require identical framing. Give the primary subject a clear visual focus while allowing the surrounding environment to provide useful context, scale, and atmosphere.
Prioritize SWTOR-era and Old Republic-era visual language. Clothing, armor, architecture, starships, weapons, equipment, terminals, droids, vehicles, furnishings, and other technology should feel appropriate to that period when they appear. Avoid designs strongly associated with later Star Wars eras unless the individual Image Subject specifically requires them.
When the subject is tied to a particular faction, organization, culture, location, historical period, or StarForgeRP development, follow the supplied lore and continuity information rather than replacing it with generic Star Wars imagery.
Do not invent lore-significant uniforms, insignia, technology, architecture, symbols, relationships, events, or outcomes merely to make the image more elaborate.
When an uncertain detail is not necessary to the composition, it may remain visually unspecified.
Where appropriate, use environmental depth, atmospheric haze, practical or holographic illumination, weather, planetary terrain, architecture, machinery, interiors, crowds, distant activity, or culturally appropriate surroundings.
Background detail should support the primary subject and help establish the setting without overwhelming the composition.
For original StarForgeRP characters and other community-created subjects, follow supplied descriptions and reference material when available.
Preserve specifically requested identifying features, proportions, clothing, equipment, markings, colors, or other established design elements while creating a new composition rather than closely reproducing unrelated artwork.
If no reference image is supplied, create an original interpretation from the written description. Do not request a reference merely because one could improve precision.
Weapons should appear only when relevant to the subject.
Lightsabers should not be added merely as general Star Wars decoration; include them only when they meaningfully belong to the character, event, location, activity, or subject being depicted.
Do not include titles, captions, logos, borders, watermarks, webpage elements, decorative written language, readable interface labels, or other visible text unless the individual Image Subject specifically calls for them.
Compose the artwork for a 4:3 frame.
Keep important faces, characters, objects, landmarks, vehicles, and other essential visual information comfortably within the composition, with enough surrounding space to prevent important details from being lost near the edges.
The primary subject should remain recognizable and readable when the image is displayed on StarForgeRP at approximately 440 × 330 px.

Environment & Travel
Standard Text
Ilum is dominated by snow-covered mountains, frozen plains, exposed ice fields, and extensive cavern systems. SWTOR's planetary codex describes a world harsh enough to discourage ordinary colonization, although its temperatures do not reach the extremes found on Hoth. Larger animals nevertheless survive in the environment.
Away from established landing zones or shelters, cold, difficult terrain, poor visibility, distance, and mechanical failure can become serious problems. Heated equipment, reliable transportation, navigation, communications, emergency shelter, medical supplies, and a credible extraction plan can matter as much as weapons.
Ilum's remoteness should remain meaningful even for characters with access to starships. Reaching the planet and reaching a particular cavern, ruin, research site, or military position are different problems. A traveler may know how to reach Ilum without possessing authorization, coordinates, local knowledge, or safe access to the place they actually want to enter.

Crystal Caverns & Pilgrimage
Standard Text
Ilum's most enduring importance comes from the crystal caverns beneath its frozen surface. SWTOR identifies their Adegan crystals as naturally suited to lightsabers and describes Jedi traveling to the planet to select crystals, meditate, improve their weapons, and test themselves against the dangers of the environment.
A journey into the caverns can therefore carry more meaning than simply obtaining a component. Isolation, difficult travel, meditation, instruction, danger, and the personal significance of constructing or renewing a lightsaber can all make an Ilum pilgrimage an important event in a Jedi character's life.
That tradition does not mean every Jedi must visit Ilum or that every lightsaber crystal must originate there. Ilum is an important Jedi destination, not the only legitimate source of a lightsaber crystal.

Temple, Hidden Routes & Enclaves
Standard Text
Ancient Jedi established a temple above Ilum's crystal caverns and once used the planet as a training ground. SWTOR's Ilum Temple codex states that the Order concealed the hyperspace routes from the wider Republic and that learning the route through the Force became an early trial for aspiring Jedi. Warfare involving Exar Kun later destroyed those ancient training grounds, after which the planet supported a much smaller Jedi presence.
By the SWTOR era, the Order maintained scattered enclaves and discreet temples that sheltered pilgrims and Masters seeking seclusion. The Sith Empire's discovery and invasion of the world ended Ilum's former secrecy as a practical defense, but the older history still allows forgotten approaches, abandoned shelters, sealed chambers, lost records, and isolated sites to matter.
Ilum and Tython (https://www.starforgerp.com/galaxy/planets-moons/tython) should not be treated as interchangeable Jedi worlds. Tython became a major center of Jedi institutional life during the SWTOR period, while Ilum is better understood as a remote sacred destination associated with crystals, pilgrimage, meditation, and specialized training.

Conflict & Strategic Legacy
Subheading
Imperial Invasion & the Battle for Ilum
Standard Text
The Sith Empire eventually discovered Ilum and attacked the small Jedi presence protecting it. Imperial forces devastated sanctuaries and began harvesting the world's crystals, turning a remote Jedi pilgrimage site into a strategic resource zone.
The crystals were valuable for more than lightsabers. SWTOR establishes Republic and Imperial research into their military applications, especially their ability to support unusually effective stealth technology. During the fighting on Corellia, Republic intelligence uncovered evidence of Imperial plans involving Ilum's crystals, prompting the Galactic Republic (https://www.starforgerp.com/lore/factions-powers/galactic-republic) to commit forces to the planet against the Sith Empire (https://www.starforgerp.com/lore/factions-powers/sith-empire).
For the Jedi, the conflict represented the invasion of sacred ground. For both galactic powers, it also became a struggle over resources capable of changing military operations far beyond Ilum itself.

Darth Malgus & the False Emperor Crisis
Standard Text
While Republic and Imperial forces were already fighting over Ilum, Darth Malgus launched his breakaway New Empire and attacked both sides with a fleet that included experimental warships. The resulting Battle of Ilum became the opening confrontation in the campaign that continued aboard Malgus's battlestation during The False Emperor.
For Ilum, the lasting significance is physical as much as political. Jedi ruins, Imperial excavation sites, Republic defenses, abandoned positions, and wreckage from successive operations can exist close enough for one expedition to encounter several different layers of the planet's history.

The Gray Secant & Later Wreckage
Standard Text
Ilum later became the site of another unusual intrusion when the ancient Gree vessel Gray Secant arrived at the Western Ice Shelf. Its automated research program transformed portions of the old battlefield with advanced Gree structures and drew renewed Republic and Imperial activity around the area.
Later SWTOR material adds another layer of hazardous ruins: wreckage from the Emperor's Fortress fell to Ilum, including the abandoned production facility associated with the Rakatan droid replicator XR-53. These remains create opportunities for research, containment, military recovery, salvage, or investigations into technology that may still be dangerous long after the fighting that left it behind.

Ilum Temple & Crystal Caverns
Standard Text
The temple and cavern network form Ilum's principal Jedi landmark. The area is appropriate for pilgrimage, meditation, historical investigation, recovery of lost material, searches for inaccessible chambers, and conflict over access to crystal deposits.

Western Ice Shelf
Standard Text
The Western Ice Shelf carries the remains of Republic–Imperial warfare alongside the technological changes associated with the Gray Secant. Military positions, research activity, abandoned infrastructure, Gree machinery, and contested terrain make it particularly useful for stories involving several interests at once.

Scattered Enclaves, Ruins & Wreckage
Standard Text
Ilum's Jedi history was never confined to one building. Small enclaves and discreet temples once provided shelter across the planet, while later wars left military installations and wreckage of their own. A modest abandoned refuge, collapsed waystation, forgotten archive, damaged outpost, or isolated debris field can therefore provide a believable local setting without requiring the creation of another major settlement.
Heading
Ilum in the Current Setting
Standard Text
At the Current Setting (https://www.starforgerp.com/timeline/current-setting), the Galactic Republic and Sith Empire remain at war. Ilum retains obvious strategic importance because of its crystal resources, sacred sites, surviving infrastructure, research areas, and dangerous technological remains.
Characters should not assume that arriving on Ilum grants unrestricted access to every part of the world. A secured landing zone, Jedi sanctuary, military position, Gree research area, abandoned facility, and remote cavern may each have different risks and authorities. When local control matters to a story, establish the circumstances of the particular site rather than treating the entire planet as one uniform political space.
