No world exists in isolation. Planets and moons belong to star systems; systems lie within larger sectors and regions; and those larger areas help determine which worlds are connected by travel, trade, politics, conflict, migration, and shared history.
The Systems, Sectors & Regions archive provides the wider geographic context surrounding individual StarForgeRP locations. Use these entries to understand where a world sits within the galaxy, what other places lie nearby, which powers or organizations operate across the surrounding area, and what circumstances may affect characters whose lives extend beyond a single planet.
For roleplay, larger geography is especially useful to travelers, military personnel, diplomats, traders, explorers, smugglers, mercenaries, intelligence operatives, and organizations whose activities regularly cross planetary boundaries.
A star system is a group of celestial bodies associated with one or more stars. A system may contain inhabited planets, moons, asteroid fields, stations, artificial installations, or other locations that share the same immediate area of space.
System entries are most useful when several locations within the same system matter to roleplay. They can establish relationships between planets and moons, orbital infrastructure, local traffic, military presence, hazards, or recurring routes between nearby locations without requiring every detail to be repeated on several separate pages.
A character may therefore come from a particular planet while still having meaningful connections to the wider system through employment, shipping, defense, commerce, family, travel, or earlier stories.
Sectors are larger divisions of galactic space containing multiple star systems. In Legends material, sectors were used for both astrographic organization and government administration, although their boundaries, importance, and political arrangements changed over the Republic's long history.
For StarForgeRP, a sector entry should focus on the connections between its systems rather than becoming a catalogue of every known celestial body. Useful information may include major worlds, regional authorities, important hyperspace connections, military or commercial activity, neighboring sectors, contested territory, and developments that affect several systems at once.
Sector-level geography is particularly useful when a campaign or organization operates across several worlds without having a genuinely galactic reach.
Regions describe geography on an even larger scale, but the term is not always used in exactly the same way.
Some regions are broad astrographic divisions such as the Core Worlds, Inner Rim, or Outer Rim Territories. Others describe more specialized political, historical, or cultural areas such as Hutt Space or the Sith Worlds. SWTOR also uses its own broad regional labels when organizing destinations on the in-game galaxy map and in Galactic Seasons objectives.
StarForgeRP should identify which kind of region an entry represents rather than treating every regional name as part of a single rigid hierarchy.
Traditional Star Wars astrography divides much of the known galaxy into several broad regions extending outward from the galactic center. This geographic framework is well established in Legends material and remains useful for placing SWTOR-era worlds within their wider surroundings.
These names describe extremely large areas. They can suggest broad differences in accessibility, development, political importance, or distance from major centers of power, but they should not be used to assume that every world within a region shares the same government, culture, economy, or level of security.
Deep Core — The innermost region surrounding the galactic center, distinct from the better-known Core Worlds.
Core Worlds — One of the oldest and most politically significant areas of known galactic civilization, containing major worlds such as Coruscant, Corellia, and Alderaan.
Colonies — The region between the Core Worlds and Inner Rim, associated with some of the earlier outward expansion from the Core.
Inner Rim — A broad region between the Colonies and Expansion Region.
Expansion Region — The region between the Inner Rim and Mid Rim, shaped heavily by successive periods of galactic expansion and development.
Mid Rim — The region between the Expansion Region and Outer Rim Territories.
Outer Rim Territories — A vast region containing everything from important population centers and established civilizations to isolated settlements, contested worlds, and sparsely explored space.
Wild Space — A less consistently defined frontier beyond much of the established Outer Rim whose extent changed over galactic history.
Unknown Regions — A poorly explored region primarily associated with galactic west beyond the Outer Rim. Its name does not mean the area is entirely uninhabited or unknown to everyone; localized civilizations and powers may possess far greater knowledge of it than the wider Republic or Empire.
Not every important area of space fits neatly into the sequence of Core, Rim, and frontier regions. Political control, ancient history, cultural influence, and navigational convention have also produced regional names that remain important to characters and stories.
Hutt Space is an autonomous Hutt-dominated region associated with the boundary between the Mid Rim and Outer Rim. It predates many later galactic political arrangements and remains an important sphere of Hutt political, commercial, and criminal influence during the SWTOR era.
For roleplay, Hutt Space should not simply be treated as shorthand for "lawless space." Individual worlds and communities may have their own rulers, customs, businesses, security arrangements, and relationships with Hutt interests. Its value as a regional entry lies in explaining the wider network of influence connecting those places.
The Sith Worlds are an ancient region within the Esstran sector of the Outer Rim Territories associated with the historical heartland of the Sith and numerous worlds important to Sith history.
The term should not be treated as interchangeable with the entire territory of the modern Sith Empire. The Empire extends far beyond the ancient Sith Worlds, while the region itself carries historical, archaeological, religious, and cultural significance that can remain relevant regardless of contemporary borders.
Star Wars: The Old Republic also groups destinations into broad regions for navigation and gameplay. SWTOR has repeatedly used labels including Coreward Worlds, Distant Outer Rim, Hutt Space, Seat of the Empire, and Unknown and Wild Space when organizing regional objectives. Current SWTOR material continues to use terms such as Hutt Space, Seat of the Empire, Coreward Worlds, and Unknown or Wild Space.
These labels are useful when reproducing or discussing the game's own presentation of the galaxy, but they should not automatically replace established astrographic regions, sectors, or political borders. Some SWTOR gameplay groupings place worlds together for practical game purposes even when their more precise galactic locations differ.
StarForgeRP should therefore preserve SWTOR map terminology when it is relevant while using established astrography for more precise location information.
Systems, sectors, and regions matter most when they create circumstances for characters rather than simply providing coordinates.
Travel and access: Consider where a destination sits relative to other locations a character knows, which routes or transport networks may connect them, and whether the journey takes them through friendly, neutral, contested, or poorly charted space.
Authority and jurisdiction: Political influence can change between neighboring systems. Republic, Imperial, Hutt, corporate, local, criminal, or independent authorities may each matter at different points in the same journey.
Trade and supply: Regional connections can explain where food, fuel, equipment, information, luxury goods, weapons, medicine, or illicit cargo originate and where shortages or commercial opportunities might develop.
Military and intelligence activity: Fleets, patrols, listening posts, supply routes, staging areas, and contested systems often matter at a scale larger than one planet.
Movement and migration: Refugees, colonists, workers, soldiers, pilgrims, merchants, criminals, and travelers may develop connections to several worlds within the same wider area.
Reputation and identity: A character's home region may influence what others assume about them, but geographic origin should provide context rather than dictate personality, loyalty, or culture.
Persistent consequences: A campaign affecting shipping, security, political control, or infrastructure across several worlds may leave consequences that belong on a system, sector, or regional entry as well as on individual planet and Timeline pages.
Not every story needs a sector map, and not every location needs its own system entry.
Use a planet or moon page when the world itself provides the important context. Look to the wider system when several nearby celestial locations or orbital facilities matter together. Move outward to a sector or region when the story depends on relationships between multiple systems, regional politics, commerce, military activity, or travel across a broader area.
The Galactic Map can provide visual context, while individual Planets & Moons entries describe the worlds characters are most likely to experience directly.
