The galaxy of Star Wars: The Old Republic was shaped by wars, fallen powers, ideological movements, influential figures, and decisions whose consequences survived long after the original events ended.
History & Context connects that past to the characters and stories of StarForgeRP. Use these pages when a character's background depends on an earlier conflict, a world still carries the consequences of occupation or disaster, an organization inherited traditions or enemies from the past, or an old belief, ruin, artifact, or reputation still matters in the present.
The goal is not to reproduce the entire history of Star Wars. It is to explain the parts of the past that players are most likely to encounter through characters, locations, institutions, relationships, discoveries, and continuing stories.
Choose the kind of historical subject you want to explore. These categories overlap when necessary, but each approaches the past from a different direction.
Explore major wars, occupations, insurgencies, and prolonged struggles whose consequences survived beyond the fighting itself. These pages focus on causes, participants, broad outcomes, and what remained afterward: altered borders, damaged worlds, displaced populations, military traditions, political grievances, ruined sites, and inherited memories.
Explore states, empires, cultures, and civilizations whose greatest period of influence lies in the past but whose ruins, technology, descendants, beliefs, reputations, or political legacy remain relevant to the SWTOR-era galaxy.
These subjects are especially useful when characters encounter archaeology, ancient technology, inherited claims, surviving communities, historical scholarship, or dangers left behind by powers that no longer exist in their former shape.
Explore historical movements, beliefs, causes, ideological changes, and other legacies whose influence continued after the original people or organizations associated with them changed or disappeared.
Use these pages when understanding where an idea came from, why people supported or opposed it, and how later generations inherited or reinterpreted it matters more than the structure of any one organization.
Explore established figures from SWTOR and compatible Old Republic history whose choices and reputations continued to influence later generations.
These entries focus on why a person still matters: what they changed, how they are remembered, and which surviving institutions, conflicts, beliefs, locations, artifacts, or reputations remain associated with their legacy. They are selective references rather than exhaustive biographies.
Explore larger historical questions that cannot be understood through a single conflict, civilization, movement, figure, or event.
Historical Overviews connect developments across different periods and subjects, helping explain how earlier events produced later political circumstances, institutional rivalries, cultural memories, inherited beliefs, and other conditions characters may encounter during the SWTOR era.
Explore figures created through StarForgeRP continuity whose actions, relationships, discoveries, and legacies became part of the shared historical record.
These entries focus on why those figures still matter after their own stories ended: the people they influenced, records or artifacts they left behind, institutions and families they shaped, unresolved questions connected to them, and consequences that continue to create context for later characters and stories.
History & Context and the Timeline describe the shared past from different directions.
History & Context primarily explains what a historical subject was, why it mattered, what changed because of it, and which consequences survived.
The Galactic Timeline is the better starting point when the main question is when something happened, what came before or after it, or how separate developments fit into chronological sequence.
The Era Overview provides the wider political, military, and social circumstances surrounding different periods, while the Event Directory gives individual turning points more explanation when their causes and consequences require more than a chronological entry.
These pages should connect to one another rather than repeat the same information.
History becomes most useful when it gives a character circumstances to respond to rather than facts to memorize.
A character may inherit the consequences of an event they never witnessed. Family stories, public education, government propaganda, religious teaching, military tradition, migration, damaged communities, disputed property, monuments, ruins, old rivalries, and institutional memory can all carry earlier events into everyday life.
Consider whether the character experienced the subject personally or learned about it from an earlier generation.
Consider who taught them what happened and whether that account was neutral, incomplete, ideological, private, or shaped by propaganda.
Consider what remains physically or socially connected to the past: a ruined site, family reputation, institutional tradition, artifact, border, grievance, debt, obligation, or relationship.
Consider how the character's homeworld, profession, faction, family, culture, education, or personal experiences affect what they would realistically know.
Allow different characters to interpret the same history differently. Shared history can create loyalty, resentment, curiosity, disagreement, indifference, opportunity, or entirely different conclusions.
History provides circumstances. Roleplay determines what an individual does with them.
StarForgeRP uses established Star Wars: The Old Republic material as the primary external foundation for its historical setting, with compatible Legends material used where it can reasonably supplement SWTOR without contradicting stronger evidence or being projected into the wrong period.
StarForgeRP-created events and consequences can also become part of the shared historical record. Their absence from an external Star Wars source does not make them errors; they belong to community continuity rather than established SWTOR lore.
Information recorded in the archive is also not automatically common in-character knowledge. Historical understanding may depend on education, access to records, profession, affiliation, culture, secrecy, propaganda, personal experience, and the passage of time.
For the full framework governing established lore, supplementary material, StarForgeRP-created continuity, interpretation, uncertainty, and character knowledge, read Continuity & Canon.
Use History & Context when you want to understand why an earlier conflict, power, movement, person, or historical development still matters.
Use the Current Setting when you need StarForgeRP's present-day political, military, and story circumstances.
Use the Timeline when chronology or the circumstances of a particular era matter.
Use Galaxy when history has shaped a specific world, settlement, base, ruin, landmark, or other physical location.
Return to Lore for the factions, organizations, cultures, Force traditions, species, technologies, and other subjects that developed within that history.
Use Roleplay and the Characters archive to follow how inherited history continues through StarForgeRP's shared stories and character relationships.
