Historical Overviews

Galactic history rarely makes sense as a collection of isolated events. Rivalries develop across generations, institutions change after repeated crises, old conflicts acquire new meanings, and the consequences of decisions can survive through traditions, ruins, political assumptions, family histories, and inherited reputations.

Historical Overviews follow those connections across the Old Republic era. Each overview begins with a larger historical question and brings together only the conflicts, powers, movements, people, places, and turning points needed to explain how that subject developed and why its consequences still matter.

A Historical Overview follows a relationship through time rather than remaining inside one event or category.

An overview might examine how a rivalry changed through successive wars and political settlements, how an institution responded to several generations of crisis, how an old belief or reputation acquired new meanings, or why a location contains consequences from several distinct periods.

The timespan may cover decades or centuries when the subject requires it. The scope should still remain selective: dates, battles, rulers, and other details belong only when they help explain the larger connection.

• A rivalry, alliance, grievance, or political relationship that changed through several conflicts or settlements.

• An institution or tradition reshaped by repeated crises across different periods.

• A historical reputation, belief, or controversy whose meaning changed between generations.

• A world, settlement, ruin, temple, battlefield, or other location shaped by several layers of history.

• A chain of events whose combined consequences matter more than any one event viewed alone.

• A historical question that crosses several categories but does not require a complete chronology of the galaxy.

Individual sustained conflicts belong primarily under Wars & Conflicts. States and civilizations whose principal period of power lies in the past belong under Historical Powers & Civilizations.

Historical movements and inherited ideas belong under Movements, Ideologies & Legacies, while people whose decisions left important historical consequences belong under Historical Figures.

Historical Overviews and the Timeline can discuss many of the same developments while answering different questions.

The Galactic Timeline is the primary reference for chronological sequence: when an event occurred, what came before or after it, and how separate developments fit together in time.

The Era Overview explains the wider political, military, and social circumstances surrounding different periods, making it especially useful for understanding the world in which a character lived.

The Event Directory gives individual turning points additional treatment when one battle, treaty, disaster, discovery, or other event needs more explanation than a chronological entry can provide.

Established events do not guarantee a single shared understanding of the past.

Governments, military organizations, Jedi and Sith traditions, Mandalorian communities, individual worlds, scholars, veterans, families, and political movements may preserve different accounts or emphasize different parts of the same history. Public records may coexist with institutional teaching, personal testimony, propaganda, archaeological evidence, restricted information, or discoveries made long afterward.

A character's knowledge therefore depends on more than whether an event happened. Education, profession, affiliation, culture, family history, access to records, secrecy, propaganda, personal experience, and the passage of time can all shape what they know and what they believe it means.

When established SWTOR material or StarForgeRP continuity leaves genuine uncertainty, competing perspectives, or incomplete evidence, an overview should preserve that uncertainty rather than resolve it through invented certainty.

A connected history becomes useful to roleplay when it gives characters circumstances to inherit, interpret, question, or change.

Someone may carry the effects of an old conflict through family memory, military tradition, political education, religious teaching, migration, citizenship, damaged property, community reputation, institutional doctrine, archaeological work, or relationships whose origins predate them. Another person shaped by the same history may understand it differently—or know almost nothing about it.

Consider which parts of that history a character experienced personally, which reached them through other people or institutions, and which remain distant scholarship. Then consider what survived into their own life: a place, relationship, grievance, obligation, belief, artifact, reputation, professional connection, unanswered question, or inherited responsibility.

Use the Galactic Timeline when chronological placement is the main question, and the Era Overview when the wider circumstances of a historical period matter.

Use Galaxy when history survives through a particular planet, settlement, facility, ruin, battlefield, or landmark.
